Joe Allen Stewart was born October 2, 1924 on his family farm in Fountain Inn, Laurens County, South Carolina. His father, William Franklin Stewart, was a farmer and his mother, Lucy Allen Peden, was a homemaker and a former school teacher. He attended school in Fountain Inn and as a junior at Fountain Inn High School he served as the State President of the South Carolina Future Farmers of America.
He began his freshman college year at Clemson University on an agricultural scholarship. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1941 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
He continued his education in the medical training program at Texas A and M University and completed his pre-medicine degree at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Joe Stewart completed his Doctor of Medicine Degree at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine in Oklahoma City. He did his medical residency at Baroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he met his future wife, Allyce Louise Rome.
Dr. Stewart was drafted into military service again in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He served in Army hospitals in the United States, in Japan at the U.S. Army Hospital, and in a mobile army surgical hospital (MASH) in Korea. Upon discharge from the Army as a Captain, Dr. Stewart returned to Fountain Inn to practice with another physician at the Stewart-McLawhorn Clinic on South Weston Street.
Dr. Stewart opened a medical practice in Summerville, Georgia in 1960. He continued
there until he joined the teaching faculty at the Family Practice Center at the Floyd County Hospital in Rome, Georgia and served as medical director for the Floyd County Clinic in Rome, Georgia until retirement in 1990 when he returned to live out his life on the family farm in Fountain Inn. Dr. Stewart was honored at his 50th Oklahoma Medical School reunion in 1999 with a distinguished alumnus award. He spent the remainder of his life as a community volunteer and as a part-time farmer. Dr. Stewart was a lifelong Presbyterian and Elder. He died on April 28, 2012, and he is buried with Louise at Harmony Church Cemetery in Fountain Inn.
Dr. Joe Allen Stewart and Louise Rome Stewart had four children: Franklin Daniel Stewart (Skipper) , Joe Allen Stewart, Jr., Susan Allyce Stewart, and Dr. Gregory John Stewart.
